Hey there, little bakers! Are you ready to embark on a sweet and meaningful journey that connects you with history and honours those who have served? Let's make Anzac Day biscuits! Get ready to mix, measure, and create delicious treats.
Materials You’ll Need:
Before we dive into the baking fun, let’s gather up the ingredients and tools for our Anzac Biscuits.
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons golden syrup (or honey if you prefer)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons boiling water
- Mixing bowl and spoon
- Baking tray
- Parchment paper
- Oven (with the help of a grown-up)
Step 1: Get Ready to Bake!
Before we start mixing, make sure you have all your ingredients ready and your grown-up helper by your side. We’re about to create a delicious treat while learning about Anzac Day!
Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a big mixing bowl, add the rolled oats, plain flour, desiccated coconut, and brown sugar. Give it a good stir to mix everything together.
Step 3: Melt Butter and Golden Syrup
With the help of a grown-up, melt the unsalted butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan. Once it’s all melted and mixed together, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.
Step 4: Add the Magic Ingredient
In a small bowl, combine the baking soda and boiling water. Add this mixture to the melted butter and golden syrup. It will make your biscuits nice and crispy.
Step 5: Mix It All Together
Pour the wet mixture into your dry ingredients and stir until well combined. You’ll start to see dough forming. This is where the deliciousness begins!
Step 6: Shape Your Biscuits
Now it’s time to shape your Anzac biscuits! Take spoonfuls of the mixture and roll them into little balls. Place the balls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Leave some space between them – they’ll spread as they bake.
Step 7: Bake to Golden Perfection
With your grown-up helper, pop the baking tray into the oven preheated to 160°C. Let the biscuits bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden.
Step 8: Cool and Enjoy
Once your Anzac biscuits are out of the oven, let them cool on a wire rack. The best part comes next – tasting your delicious creations! Enjoy your biscuits while learning about the significance of Anzac Day. Below is the ‘Here they come- A day to remember’ video from DVA, aimed at teaching young children the importance of Anzac day.
Congratulations, young bakers! You've not only baked scrumptious Anzac Day biscuits but also learned about a day that holds significant importance to Australia. As you savour each bite, remember the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served.
